Teaching plan
一. Teaching material:
As the third period of unit 5, this period focus on reading. It talks about Mickey Mouse, from his general facts to his spirit. After learning words and structures in the last two periods, this period typically introduces a cartoon character and it’s close to students’ lives, which will easily arouse their interest. 二. Analysis of students:
Most of our students in grade 8 have learned something about TV shows and talked about some famous stars in the last periods;
However, they have limited vocabulary and sentence structures, thus spoken English may be a difficulty for them. 三. Teaching aims:
1. Language aims: learn key words and new sentence structures about Mickey. 2. Ability aims: (1)
Help students to improve their reading ability through skimming and scanning. (2)
Be able to talk about Mickey or other characters.
3. Emotional aims:
Though we are common now, we should work hard to make our dreams come true. Never give up in front of difficulties! 四.Key points and difficult points. 1. Key points:
New words: character, common, main, reason, culture.
Learn something about Mickey, about his general facts and his spirit.
2. Difficult points: Improve reading ability. How to talk about a character.
Teaching procedures
一. Warming-up.
Have a free talk about the weather and students’ weekend activities. 二.Lead-in
1. Show some interesting pictures about the teacher’s trip to Beijing on the weekend. These pictures are about the Great wall, Beijing Duck and dumplings. They can help our students be familiar with “culture”.
2. Brain- storm.
What can you think of when talking about American culture? After students’ talk, the teacher shows the pictures of the White house, the Statue of Liberty, fast food and the president. 三.Presentation---Reading 1. Before reading: 1). A guessing game.
The teacher shows parts of Mickey one by one—from his ears, tails, feet…At the same time, let students guess what this cartoon character is. 2). A survey:
What do you know about Mickey Mouse? 2. While-reading: (1) Skimming:
Read the passage quickly to get the general idea and answer the following questions.
a. What’s the main idea of the passage? b. Match each paragraph with the main ideas (2) Scanning:
Read the article again more carefully and do the two tasks. a. Try to try to fill the time table.
b. Find specific information about Mickey.
(3)More careful reading:
Read each paragraph and answer some questions.
3. After reading: Group--work
(1) Work in your group to retell something about Mickey. (2) Discussion:
Say something about one of your favorite cartoon characters. 四.Enjoy some pictures.
Though we are common now, we should never give up in front of difficulty. One day, our dreams will come true. 五.Homework
1. Recite the second paragraph.
2. Talk with your friends about your favorite cartoon characters and write them down.
